DEATH OF DR. ELIJAH CURTISS
AFTER PASSING THE SEVENTY-SIXTH MILE-POST HE GOES TO ETERNAL REWARD.
Our City Loses a Citizen Respected and Revered by Everyone
The Grim Reaper, Death, has again visited our city, and claimed as his victim,
one of Lima's most popular and benevolent men - Dr. Elijah Curtiss, who,
yesterday at two o'clock, p.m., laid aside the burdeos, cares and trials of an
earthly lite, and went to his eternal reward on high.
Dr. Curtiss had attained the age of seventy-six years. He had passed the
allotted time of three score years and ten, and possessing a rugged
constitution, his friends hoped many more years would pass over his head
before he would be called upon to leave this life, but it was not so ordained
by the all-wise power which controls and directs the affairs of men. Last
week Dr. Curtiss had a congestive chill, and for several days was dangerously
sick. His family and friends looked in vain for a favorable turn in his
sickness which would give them hope that he would recover. It came not. On
the contrary he grew steadly worse, and did not rally from the first attack.
Yesterday afternoon at two o'clock, surrounded by his family, he surrendered
up his life to the God who gave it, and his spirit took his flight to the
great Beyond.
A wife and two children, Dr. C.L. Curtiss and Miss Libbie Curtiss, deplore the
death of a fond husband and an affectionate father.
Dr. Curtiss had for many years been a resident of Lima and had a most
extensive acquaintance throughout Allen county. Everyone whom he knew in Lima
or in the county was his friend. He was kind hearted and benevolent, with a
big heart and noble impulses. He was born in Berkshire County, Mass, on the
14th of April, 1812, and with his parents, came to Ohio in 1821. They settled
in Summit county, where Mr. Curtiss bought a farm upon which Dr. Curtiss
passed his boyhood days. His collegiate-education he obtained at Hudson
College, at the conclusion of which he entered the office of Dr. Hanchett, of
Akron, and studied medicine, attending medical lectures at Herkimer Medical
Institute. He began the practice of medicne at the age of nineteen years, and
married Miss Flora F. Hanchett, the daughter of his former medical preceptor.
He removed to Lima when there was almost no town here, and began the paractice
of medicine. In addition to practicing his profession he was engaged with his
brother in keeping a general store. This was in the early years of Lima's
history. After several years experience in that business, he retired from the
store and confined himself exclusively to the practice of medicine, in which
he was eminently successful. He had a large practice and continued to attend
his patients until his last illness.
He was a number of years Coroner of Allen county, and served the city as
Health Officer for severl terms.
By his death Lima loses an upright man; one who strove to do his duty by his
fellow men, and his kind, venerable face will be missed from our streets upon
which for many years he has been a familiar figure.
His funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock from
his late residence on Tanner Street. The Rev. Dr. Hall will officiate.
Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
