ERNEST CARL LOUIS BRECHT, Plantation Manager. Although still a comparatively
young man, Ernest C. L. Brecht, manager of the Waianae Companys sugar
plantation, on the island of Oahu, has had experience in the sugar industry in
both Europe and America, but for twenty years he has been continuously engaged
in Hawaii.
Born at Reinstorf, Germany, June 6, 1885, the son of Ernest and Helene
(Barckhausen) Brecht, Mr. Brecht received a high school education in Hanover
and was then employed in a beet sugar factory.
Just past the age of 20, Mr. Brecht arrived at Honolulu, Nov. 10, 1905, and
joined the Pioneer Mill Co., Ltd., at Lahaina, Maui, as agriculturist, and for
nine and a half years was division overseer at Kaanapali.
Mr. Brecht resigned his position with Pioneer Mill Co. on Sept. 1, 1919,
intending to go to the Philippines, but while in Honolulu was offered and
accepted the managership of the Waianae Company on Sept. 7, 1919.
During his residence on Maui he was vice-president of the Lahaina Ice Co.,
1910-19, and in 1917 and 1918, during the World War, served his adopted
country loyally as chief registrar of the selective draft. He has been
district fire warden at Waianae since 1919.
Mr. Brecht is a member of the Pacific Club and Honolulu Auto Club.
