JAMES BICKNELL, city and County Auditor. A descendant of an old missionary
family, James Bicknell, city and county auditor, has served the community in
that official capacity for the past twenty years. He followed a business
career in Honolulu for a number of years, beginning in the employ of T. G.
Thrum in 1890, following which he was employed by several well known firms as
an accountant, continuing in this line of work until July 1, 1905, when county
government was first established. He was elected auditor in that year and has
been re-elected each succeeding term since. From 1896 until 1900, he was in
the United States customs service.
Born at Kohala, Hawaii, May 26, 1869, Mr. Bicknell is the son of James and
Ellen (Bond) Bicknell. His mothers parents, Rev. Elias Bond and Mrs. Bond,
came to Hawaii as missionaries in 1840. Mr. Bicknells father settled in
Hawaii in the 60s and was connected for many years with the Hawaiian Board of
Missions as a minister. He died in 1892.
Mr. Bicknell received his education at Punahou School and Oahu College,
later attending Healds Business College in San Francisco. He was in the
National Guard in 1887 and 1888, and was a member of the Mounted Reserves in
1893, during the Revolution.
He married Aimee I. Gibble in Honolulu, June 28, 1906. They have one
daughter, Doreen Aimee Bicknell. In politics Mr. Bicknell is a Republican. He
is an Elk, Odd Fellow, Knight of Pythias and a member of Phoenix Lodge, the
Native Sons of Hawaii, and the Commercial and Ad Clubs.
