HARRY ARMITAGE, Broker and Realtor. A resident of Honolulu for more than fifty 
years, Harry Armitage has the distinction of having been the only stock broker 
in Hawaii until the organization of the Honolulu Stock and Bond Exchange in 
1898.
  Coming here from Auckland, New Zealand, in 1871, Mr. Armitage became a 
salesman for A. S. Cleghorn & Co. and traveled for that firm for nine years. 
For two years he engaged in prospecting in Idaho and Utah and in 1882 returned 
to the islands and became overseer and manager of the sugar plantation at 
Honokaa, Hawaii. He later removed to his native land for a very short period, 
and then went into the hat business. In 1886 this was sold, and Mr. Armitage 
joined the Honolulu auction firm of James F. Morgan, where he remained for 
nine years.
  In 1896 he entered business as a broker. The firm of Harry Armitage & Co. 
was organized in 1912, the other two members being the late H. C. Carter and 
S. A. Walker. This partnership was dissolved in 1924 and Mr. Armitage 
continued in the brokerage business alone, adding a real estate department. He 
is represented on the mainland by Sutro & Co. and Carl Raiss & Co.
  Mr. Armitage was a member of the Honolulu Rifles during the Revolutionary 
period in Hawaii. Fraternally, he is a Mason, Elk and Knight of Pythias.
  Born in Auckland, N.Z., Dec. 16, 1854, Mr. Armitage is the son of James 
Taylor and Hannah (Randall) Armitage. His education was received at St. John’s 
College, Auckland, and Nelson College, Nelson, New Zealand. In 1905 he married 
Emma Leialoha Spitz of Honolulu.
