Part 1.

      Hawai'ian Chronology 
                 and 
      The United States

750 A.D. approximate.

The first settlers in Hawai'i arrive from Polynesia, perhaps by way of
the Marquesas Islands.

1100 - approximate;

A two-century period of canoe voyages
between Hawai'i and Tahiti begins.

1713 - approximate;

KAHEKILI is born. A son of KEKAULIKE, 
Was ruler of Maui, and father of KALANIKUPULE and KOALAUKANI.
Some say he was also. to be the father of KAMEHAMEHA I., who later
fought against him. His half-brother KAEO. helped to extend his rule to
the island of Oahu and set up court at Waikiki, leaving his son
Kalanikupule to rule over Maui 

1728;

JAMES COOK is born in a farm cottage in Yorkshire, England.

1736. Approximate;

KEEAUMOKU is born. Son of KEAWEPOEPOE and KUMAAIKU. He was a younger
brother on his father's side of the twins KAMANAWA and KAMEEIAMOKU.

1748; 

KAEOKULANI is born.

1756;

KAIANA is born.

1758;

November, KAMEHAMEHA I is born in Kohala, northern part of the island of
Hawai'i. Called " The lonely One," the chief who first united all the
main islands under one rule. His mother was KEKUIAPOIWA, a niece of
KAHEKILLI, and his father was KEOUAKALANI, a stepson of ALAPAINI. It is
said, however, that the real father was KAHEKILI, against whom he would
later battle. It was foretold that the baby would be a danger
to the chiefs, and the mother arraigned that he should be taken away and
reared   by NAEOLE. After 5 years the child was returned to the court,
and was trained in warfare by KEKUAHAUPIO.

1760;

KALANIKUPULE is born.

1765;

KAIKIOEWA is born.

1768; 

KALANIMOKU --( BILLY PITT ) is born.
KAAHUMANU is born at Hana on the island of Maui.

1774;

Francisco de Paula MARIN is born in Andalusia, Spain.

1776;

HOAPILIKANE is born. ( ULUMAHEIHEI )
Son of the royal twin, KAMEEIAMOKU  and his wife KEALIIOKAHEKILI, He was
renamed HOAPILI because was the close companion of KAMEHAMEHA I.

U.S. July 4. The Declaration of Independence is proclaimed in
Philadephia. Battles between the British  and American forces conclude
with George Washington's victory at Trenton at Christmas.

1778;

KEOPUOLANI, sacred wife of KAMEHAMEHA I and mother of two Kings
and a Princess, is born.

January 18, Captain James Cook and crews of ships RESOLUTION and
DISCOVERY sight northwestern islands of Hawai'ian group and he names
them the Sandwich Islands, he first goes ashore at Waimea, Kauai, on the
21st.

November 26, Cook's expedition, returning from the Arctic, sights the
island of Maui and begins charting the coast of the island of Hawai'i.

U.S. Surviving a terrible winter in camp at Valley Forge, the American
army fights at Monmouth and Newport.

1779;

January 17. The English ships arrive at Kealakekua Bay on the Kona coast
of the Big Island, to be greeted by ten thousand Hawai'ians offshore.

February 14, Skirmish ashore at Kealakekua results in death of COOK,
four marines, and many Hawai'ians; 

February 21st, COOK's bones are buried in the Bay.

U.S., Spain joins France in an alliance supporting the revoutionary
efforts of the fledgling United States.

1780;

KAUMUALILI, future King of the island of Kauani, is born.

1781;

KAPIOLANI, who will defy the volcano goddess PELE in 1824, is born.

U.S.  The Articles of Confederation are signed by "The United States in
Congress
Assembled."

1782;

KALANIOPUU dies and a decade of war among leading Hawai'ian chiefs
begins.
KAMEHAMEHA defeats and kills KIWALAO at Mokuolai.

U.S. Preliminary Articles of Peace are signed between Great Britan and
the UNited States and allies.

1785;

The first trading ship, a unnamed fur-trading brig under Captain James
Hanna, stops in the islands on its return to China.

1786; 

May 24, Two British trading ships. THE KING GEORGE under Nathaniel
PORTLOCK and THE QUEEN CHARLOTTE under George DIXON visit 
Hawai'i on voyage from Northwest Coast of America to China

May 29, The French navel frigates 
BOUSSOLE and ASTROLABE, under the command of Count de la PEROUSE, spend
the day off the island of Maui.

U.S. The Virginia Statute for Religios Freedom, model for the First
Amendment of the Constitution, is adopted by the Congress.

1787;

May 20, The British ship IMPERIAL EAGLE, flying Austrian colors, arrives
in the islands, under Charles William BARKLEY.

August 2, The British ship NOOTKA under John MEARES arrives. On its
departure for China, KAIANA sails as a passenger and returns with
William DOUGLAS in 1788.

U.S.  " The Contrast," by Royall Tyler, first American comedy produced
by a professional theater company, is performed in New York.

May 25, The Constitutional Convention opens in Philadelphia.

1788; 

January 2, The British ship PRINCE OF WALES, under James COLNETT,
arrives in company with PRINCESS ROYAL under Charles DUNCAN.

1789; 

August, The Boston ship COLUMBIA REDIVIVA, under Robert GRAY, first
American vessel to circumnavigate the globe, arrives in the islands.

KAMEHAMEHA I invades Maui

U.S. America hold first Presidential 
election and WASHINGTON is inaugurated in New York.

1790;

An explosive erruption of KILAUEA VOLCANO destroys part of the forces of
KEOUA KUAHUULA, an opponent of KAMEHAMEHA I.

Simon METCALFE, master of the American snow ELEANORA, commtts 
" Olowalu Massacre " in retaliation. CHEF KAMEEIAMOKU attacks consort
FAIR AMERICAN, and JOHN YOUNG (OLOHANA) and ISAAC DAVIS remain in the
islands as advisors to KAMEHAMEHA.

U.S. Ninty-two newspapers are published in the nation; eight dailies,
seventy weeklies, and fourteen semi-weekly or at other intervals.
